Newbie Virgin Hair Extension/Weave Advice-What to do with Your New Hair Upon Recipet

Hey Y'all!

If you've taken the leap into the world of ordering hair extensions from an online vendor, there are few things you should do immediately upon receipt of the  hair. You want to do these things sooner then later so if there is an issue you can make any returns or exchanges as soon as possible.

First and most importantly make sure you received what you ordered. Check what you received against the packing slip or invoice. Make sure that if you ordered curly that you revived curly. Also if you find any major faults or discrepancies take a few photos with a camera and enable the time and date stamp feature. This can help expedite any communication with the vendor as they can "see what your" talking about.

*I used random 4oz bundle of hair I have in my "stash". Photos are just examples to help illustrate this post.

Measure ~ Measure the length of the hair. Take a tape measure and double check.  (I couldn't find my cloth/soft tape measure in my sewing/art stuff so I broke out the real deal).

Curly and very wavy hair are measured when stretched.

Weigh ~ If you have a scale that measures ounces weigh the bundle(s) of hair to make sure that you received the amount that you ordered. I bought this food scale at IKEA for like $4.99, it's not supposed to be used for trade (its not an official scale), but it works. I adjusted the scale so it measures zero when the bowl is on top and empty, of course. I don't have time or the patience to do math equations so it's easier for me to know that the when the scale is on the bowl it is at zero.

 

Check for Nits ~ I said nits not lice! Most hair extensions hair come from 3rd world countries and sometimes 3rd world stuff happens in the hair world. This happens on occasion. Especially if your dealing with vendors oversees or a vendor here that might not take the extra steps to remove them prior to shipping. Lice are parasites and cannot survive on hair that isn't attached to a "host". Nits are just the shells. Yeah it's gross, but it's not the biggest deal. If your totally disgusted contact your vendor ASAP and make arrangements for an exchange. If your bold, contact the vendor to let them know, and break out your fine tooth comb and get the nits out.

Wash & Condition ~ This is one of the last steps of your "inspection" In most cases you cannot return the hair once "altered" meaning washed, installed, etc.. You really want to do this for sanitary reasons. Also see how the hair reacts to washing. If you ordered curly or wavy hair you should really see the curls/waves "pop" after washing.

Seal ~ Seal the wefts this step is optional. I made a tutorial here.

Staining/Doctoring Closure Piece

I was just reading a thread on BHM (Black Hair Media), in the Weaves & Extensions section. That inspired me to do a post about staining a closure to match the scalp of a darker skinned chica! So here's how I doctored mine.
<-- As you can see the closure "scalp" is very light and doesn't match my scalp/skintone at all! So after reading some threads on BHM I decided to take it off (un-sew it) and try the Tea Staining Method. Make sure you use BLACK TEA!! I'm not sure why but everyone says to use Black Tea. Sorry I don't have pics
of the entire process. I did this before I started documenting
Before everything hair or makeup related. It's intimidating to do this the first time especially after you just spent $150 + on a clousre peice. You don't want to ruin it, but trust me you wont. It's only tea. Next time I wont be a dumb dumb and do this before I have my hair done so I don't have to take it out and put it back on. Thank God I'm crafty with a weaving needle and some thread.


Supplies

• Towel(s)
• Wide Tooth comb (y'all shouldn't be brushing your clousures!)
• Clousure Piece (duh) braid it in lose pigtails so the hair doesn't get in your way.
• Black Tea (got mine at at Target it was like $2 for 50 Target brand!)
• A plastic bowl (like some Gladware you don't care too much about).

Steps

• Prep your area lay down a towel on your work area, (mine was my carpet)
• Ok so get your kettle and boil some water.
• Pour the water in your bowl add your tea bags I've read you can use 2-10. I used 10 b/c I have a darker skin tone.
• Let the tea "steep" for 10 mins.
• Dip your closure piece in, (scalp part down) I let it sit in the Black Tea for 1 hr. (I checked it after 30mins)
• Grab a towel, lightly towel dry it be careful not to "scrunch"
• Let the clousure air dry completly before rinsing it!!! So the stain can "set" Very Important!!!
• After it's dried, rinse it with cool water NO SHAMPOO!!
• After it's dry, go get your hair did or re-install it, like I did

Presto! Note your clousure should not be the exact color of your face no one's scalp is the color of there face. After I doctored it I was a lot happier wearing the closure. Oh specs on the hair & closure.

Straight & Silky: Hair Night

My "hair maintenance" schedule has been off a bit because of the holidays. So tonight I washed my hair with Creme of Nature poo & con, then let it air dry. I figured I'd post some pics of my hair air-dryed and how & what I used to straighten my hair. I'm currently rocking some fierce extensions! I ordered the hair from Halley's Curls back in September. I've only ordered from Halley's once, but there's some drama going on about her as a vendor on BHM (Black Hair Media) so I'm a bit wary of the company now.
I ordered 12oz of Indian Remy Hair 18" (I'm a length whore) (GW =Gentle Wave) and a matching (GW Large Closure). Remy hair is an investment and can last you many installs if you care for it properly. I plan on getting a new install in about 2wks and I plan on using the same hair.
I ♥ my flat iron!!! I bought it at Sally's it's a Jibre De Paris Ceramic Tourmaline iron
1 1/2. It gets my hair pin straight!!!! Excuse my face in these pics. I had on no makeup and in no way was I looking cute. I'ts very IMPORTANT to use a heat protecter when using a flat iron!! I use Ion (Anti-Frizz Solutions) Heat Protection Straightening Iron Spray, which I also got
at Sally's and it's not too expensive. I believe it was like $5.
A Thermal Heat Protectant is IMPORTANT for the health of the hair and prevents breakage, and burning.

Well peeps I'm out. I tried to do a video about the new Urban Decay & Balm Lady Palettes but I was having majors ISSUES figuring out how to look in the web cam, apply makeup and talk at the same time. I need to find a tutorial about making a tutorial :) Tomorrow, I'll be at Victoria's Secret bin digging for discounts because they are having their big Semi-Annual Sale! I've got DD Cups and those dissappear the fastest. Usually the left overs are fugly. Why do the big boobed girls get such crappy bra selections!!!
